Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my website's pictures showing up as boxes with a red X in them?
There could be a number of causes for this issue. Here are the most common ones you need to check on:
Did you change your website settings for Server Type to "Windows" rather than "Linux"? This won't work.
- If Zebradots hosts your website, that's not the right setting -- all our servers run Linux
- Log in, go to the Settings tab, and change it back to Linux
- Re-upload the image that failed and re-insert it into your webpage
- Only images that were uploaded after this change are affected; all others should remain visible
- If you edited your website before you could view the site at your domain name, some of the images may point to your temporary URL
- If the temporary URL ever changes or is retired, these images would no longer be visible
- Right-click the box where the image should be and view the image information -- on what domain is the image stored? Is it the temporary URL?
- If so, you will need to log in to your website (through your actual domain name) and re-insert that image (or edit the image tag to point to the correct domain) and save your changes so the images will be visible
- Just because you can view an image on your computer does not mean it will display in a web browser properly
- This is not a limitation of your website
- Search our FAQ on resizing images and image formats
- Try a common format, such as 24-bit JPG or 8-bit PNG images
